Associate Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity

The Associate Vice President in the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED), in consultation and coordination with the Vice President, will assist in leading institutional planning, implementation and assessment of goals and strategic priorities of the University as it pertains to diversity and inclusion as well as equity and compliance – leveraging the Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) as a guide. In this expanded role, the Assoc. VP will provide critical leadership and support for Brown University's efforts to develop a more diverse and inclusive academic community where all members are valued. The incumbent will be an integral member of OIED, with primary responsibilities for leading and facilitating an internal strategic planning process for the office since its recent expansion in 2017. Additional responsibilities will include sustaining a comprehensive set of initiatives and partnerships across the University by instituting capacity building measures that offer tangible guidance to campus-wide leaders (department managers, academic chairs, etc.) as the university continues to incorporate equity and diversity into its infrastructure. The Associate VP will provide direct management support for the VPIED and will share responsibility for oversight of OIED as needed.

Qualifications:
  • An advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred in a field relevant to the primary job duties)
  • 6-8 years of progressively responsible administrative experience with management in designing, delivering, evaluating and/or leading activities, programs and services related to institutional diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or social justice.
  • Strong commitment to and demonstrated skills in leading diversity and equity initiatives; preferably in a competitive research university setting. Demonstrated experience effectively working and establishing rapport with diverse populations with strong working knowledge of social justice theories and scholarship. Fluency with the prevailing and emerging trends in higher education and knowledge of best practices in diversity and inclusion programming and training.
  • Experience leading diversity and inclusion training and education programs for a variety of constituencies. Proven experience working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels in a complex environment to facilitate positive processes and initiatives coupled with measurable outcomes and deliverables.
  • In partnership with University Human Resources, Dean of the Faculty, and Academic departments, design effective strategies to increase diversity in employment and identifying best practices for recruitment, hiring, promotion, and retention of faculty and staff.
  • Effective project management, organization, and analytical skills. Excellent communication (oral and written) skills required, ability to effectively engage and present to a wide variety of constituents, both internally and externally. Excellent interpersonal skills with exceptional listening skills and high emotional intelligence. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work both independently and also in close collaboration with the Vice President.
  • Experience writing and executing strategic diversity and inclusion action plans with expertise in leading ongoing assessments.
  • Proven experience in developing institutional practices and policies that impact a wide constituency. Knowledge of federal, state, and higher education policy related to Title IX legal requirements and programmatic responsibilities and/or Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, and or ADA/Section 504 preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion both on campus and through involvement in regional and national organizations.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends.
