Job Summary

UM-Dearborn currently receives over $8 million annually in external funding. The Office of the Research led by the Vice Provost for Research (VPR) is the point of contact at the University of Michigan-Dearborn for all research programs and development as well as sponsored research issues for the campus. In addition, it also serves as the liaison between Dearborn faculty and staff, external sponsors and research administrative offices at the Ann Arbor campus. The Office of Research oversees the operations of two offices, Office of Research Development (ORD) and the Office of Research Administration (ORA). The mission of the ORD is to foster research collaboration, facilitate project ideation, supports faculty research development, enhance UM-Dearborn's competitiveness in securing external research funding and implement policies for research integrity and compliance. The ORA provides support for the preparation and submission of proposals for externally sponsored projects and post awards.



Responsibilities*

The Assistant Director of ORD reports to the Vice Provost for Research (VPR) and will be an important contributor to a new campus-wide strategic plan for research development. The Assistant Director of Research Development will support the new research initiatives and oversee the research support activities at the UM-Dearborn campus.


The Assistant Director of Research Development will have the following key responsibilities:


  • Support VPR to expand research opportunities: Understand how campus research priorities and faculty expertise fit into larger regional and national context for effective proposal development strategy. Work closely with VOR to develop strategies to identify and reach out to a variety of potential sponsors that match with the strengths of the campus, plan and facilitate collaborative faculty teams and external stakeholders to catalyze new research programs and increase the competitiveness of our extramural funding proposals.

  • Research Development: Working with VPR to create new initiatives and incentives to expand the campus research capacity in order to meet our high expectations of research growth. Promoting scholarship and research excellence through faculty development, internal grant programs and external partnerships. Advise and train faculty on best practices for proposal design and writing; consult on early stage proposal ideation, teaming and development, and provide critical reviews and feedback. Administering strategic seed funding initiatives to facilitate faculty research at the campus level with potential for high impact research. Managing campus-wide sponsored project development activities, internal review, and selection of limited submissions, and peer review processes. Design and implement strategies in collaboration with the colleges and External Relations to communicate the accomplishments, impact and reputation of UM-Dearborn's research activities to internal and external audiences in support of promoting campus excellence in research and scholarly endeavors.

  • Assist VPR in gathering and analyzing research data: Undertaking data gathering, reporting and analysis for the purpose of strategic research planning, resource allocation and utilization, and broader administrative decision-making.

  • Other campus-wide research activities: Coordinating and managing other campus-wide research-related activities such as research seminars and Responsible Conduct of Research training.


Required Qualifications*

The successful candidate should have the highest personal integrity and a demonstrated ability to deal with people in an ethical/honest manner in accordance with the standards of the profession; an ability to lead and/or support change efforts with a deep understanding of cultural context; exceptional interpersonal communications, problem-solving and team-building skills; excellent written, conversational and presentation skills; proven ability to plan and manage projects and project teams and to deliver outcomes in a timely manner; excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to set priorities, work independently and perform well under pressure.

  • Master Degree

  • Proven ability to provide inspiring and strategic leadership for academic research development and support systems in a higher education environment

  • A proven track record of successfully implementing innovative activities for faculty research support

  • Significant experience in reviewing, editing, and rewriting technical texts

  • Experience of demonstrated success in developing and managing strategic initiatives


Desired Qualifications*
  • Ph.D degree desired but not required

  • Close familiarity with research administrative processes
