Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the administration of processing and operations for Veteran Affairs (VA) programs and to assist the Assistant Vice President of Financial Aid and Veteran Affairs with strategizing, directing, planning and implementing policies and procedures for the department. The Assistant director oversees the operations and supervises the staff on a day to day basis and provides supervision and management to the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) VA office to ensure high quality customer service as well as meet the needs of students and the administration for CSN. Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President of Financial Aid and Veteran Affairs, the Assistant Director is responsible for providing overall leadership and guidance in all areas of the VA Office to help ensure that the students attending CSN receive the best quality experience possible. The Assistant Director of Veteran Affairs is responsible for all areas of federal, state, and institutional compliance related to veteran affairs.


This position requires strong Veteran Affairs (VA) experience and the ability to apply such strategies in an efficient manner consistent with the policies of the Vice President of Financial Aid and Veteran Affairs. The incumbent must be a well-rounded individual who has experience in all aspects of VA. Specific aspects associated with the duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the coordination, development and maintenance of a comprehensive VA Policy and Procedures Manual.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations relating to VA.
  • Ensure College Policies are adhered to at all times.
  • Ensure that all Veteran Affairs regulations and compliance requirements are met.
  • Ensure that all decisions made are in the best interest of the student, the College and all agencies involved.
  • Handle student concerns and complaints through to satisfactory resolution.
  • Liaison for employees and other departments to orchestrate a positive communication flow.
  • Maintain up-to-date understanding VA and institutional regulations and assure compliance requirements are met.
  • Provide leadership to staff and Team Leader meetings.
  • Perform employee evaluations and provide Performance Plans for Improvement as necessary.
  • Quality Control (QC) for Support Staff area.
  • Support staff team management.
  • Training and assessment of New Employees.
  • Work directly and indirectly with students in their VA quest.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management.


Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or universityand five-years of progressively increased student support and Veteran Affairs engagement. Also requires knowledge of requirements associated with United State Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits and the certification process, experience serving as a VA School Certifying Official (SCO) or a combination of equivalent education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience to include the completion of personnel evaluations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the purpose and function of community colleges.
  • Experience with budget oversight.
  • Knowledge of the holistic advising processes to include student development, retention, and student success best practices.
  • Knowledge of US Code Title 38: Principles of Excellence.
  • Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) experience.
  • Possess excellent written, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and college administrators
  • Working knowledge of computerized Student Information Systems, VA-Once and Microsoft Suite.
