The Position:
Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Mathematics at San Diego Miramar College beginning Spring 2018. Located in the Mira Mesa/Scripps Ranch area of San Diego, Miramar College is one of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District. The assignments may also include day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus responsibilities.

Major Responsibilities:

The Contract Instructor College is expected to meet the qualifications presented on the Contract Instructor College classification description and displayed as Desired Qualifications and Training and Experience, as well as the Licensure upon completing the first six (6) months of employment in a Contract Instructor College assignment. Some of the following qualifications may be duplicates from the list on the linked Contract Instructor College classification description. Those qualifications below that are not duplicates from the list on the linked Contract Instructor College classification description and are not related to the area of specialty (e.g.: subject matter/disciplines, etc.) are desired or preferred but not required. The Assistant Professor of Mathematics reports to the Miramar College Dean of the School of Mathematics, Biological, Exercise, and Physical Sciences. The Assistant Professor is expected to perform the following duties: Direct and instruct students in basic skills, associate degree, and transfer-level mathematics courses ranging from basic arithmetic and statistics through calculus and differential equations. Integrate technology into the classroom as a teaching and learning tool. Teach lab classes. Teach hybrid or online classes. Participate in mathematics department meetings and committees. Assist with curriculum revision and course/program assessments. Maintain office hours for student advisement. Participate in various college and/or district committees which promote shared governance. Fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with district guidelines.

Qualifications:
Masters in mathematics or applied mathematics OR Bachelors in either of the above AND Masters in statistics, physics, or mathematics education OR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have: 1. Demonstrated mastery of mathematical subject matter. 2. Demonstrated experience, ability, and interest in teaching mathematics courses ranging from arithmetic and statistics through calculus and differential equations. 3. Demonstrated willingness to enhance his/her mastery of the theory and applications of mathematics and pedagogy. 4. Demonstrated competence in the use of calculators, computers and/or other multimedia technologies in instruction. 5. Demonstrated interest and/or past involvement with the teaching of mathematics using non-traditional approaches that promote student learning. 6. Demonstrated understanding of the mathematics curriculum currently offered at a community college as it relates to the mission of the college and the responsibilities of its faculty in realizing this mission. 7. Demonstrated experience with participatory governance, committee, and/or department work especially in an academic setting including but not limited to knowledge and experience with Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) and Program Review processes. 8. Demonstrated ability to communicate and teach effectively both orally and in writing.

Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,697.94 $7,677.65) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
