Job Summary:
Simmons University is looking for an Academic Advisor to join the Office of Undergraduate Advising within the Center for Student Success (CSS). Reporting to the Associate Director, the Academic Advisor will be responsible for advising and supporting a caseload of first-year Nursing majors. From managing placement exams to overseeing the implementation of Starfish (student success retention too), the Academic Advisor will develop programming and innovative ideas to promote the office and benefit the Simmons population. The Academic Advisor role also supports the CSS with advising related tasks and works to create relationships with other offices around campus.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary advisor for first-year Nursing majors;
  • Coordinate and plan large scale group advising sessions with Nursing faculty prior to Fall and Spring registration dates;
  • Monitor and advise students internally applying to the Nursing program to ensure satisfactory grades and GPA requirements, as well as course planning;
  • Monitor advisees academic progress, including warnings and probation, and follow-up with students in academic jeopardy;
  • Collaboration with the Associate Director to maintain Starfish the institution's student success early alert retention tool and facilitates trainings on Starfish for faculty and staff;
  • Assist with gathering and reviewing assessment data that will contribute to improving programming and student retention as a member of the office's Assessment Committee;
  • Assist in the implementation of advising and registration session of all incoming first-year students during January and June Orientation;
  • Oversee the new student placement exam process in pre-preparation for each orientation;
  • Be available to meet with students often and as needed throughout the year, through scheduled appointments and/or open office hours; pre-preparation;
  • Understand the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.;
  • Stay abreast of changing institutional information including new programs, course changes, important dates, costs, and updates in college-wide initiatives and policies;
  • Develop and implement Fall and Spring group advising for first-year Nursing students alongside faculty members;
  • Contribute to the organization and delivery of general programming for undergraduate students;
  • Collaborate with campus partners;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred;
  • Experience involving extensive student contact in a student services role in a higher education setting; at a community college or four-year institution;

Additional Qualifications:
  • Prior experience utilizing Starfish or a similar early alert retention system such as Salesforce preferred;
  • Experience in assessment, data analysis, and educational outcomes a plus;
  • Skilled at connecting and building rapport with students;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong time management, customer service, problem-solving and interpersonal skills;;
  • Ability to adapt to new and rapidly changing situations;
  • Creative and innovative with the ability to work both independently and with a team;
  • Experience successfully resolving student issues
