Job Description
The Police Communications Officer in Training, under supervision, receives on-the-job training from Police Communication Officers; handles routine and emergency radio, telephone, and 911 calls for service following special or written instructions for transmitting and routing calls.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct a search for arrest records and offense information for legitimate background investigations for officers on calls; serves as a witness for paperwork in criminal matters as well as witnessing the inventory of a prisoner's personal effects. (Only conduct PVAMU/UPD employee searches when requested by a supervisor).
  • Receives all emergency calls on campus, including medical emergencies, fires, crimes, suspicious circumstances, fire and security alarms, accidents (vehicle, bicycle and other), hazardous materials incidents (toxic or radioactive spills).
  • Responds to calls for stalled elevators, power outages and major disasters.
  • Coordinates emergency response of University units (Police, RMS, Health Services, and Security Officers) and non-campus units (including EMS, Fire).
  • Follows prescribed University procedures and public safety dispatching procedures and exercises proper judgment in an emergency, for which established procedures may not exist.
  • Notifies supervisors when they are on call to inform them of incidents and receive information on the proper handling of problems like major crimes, personnel shortages, etc.
  • Operates TLETS (Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System) terminal, OMNX, ARMS for inquiries, entries, and updates to automated databases of TDCJ, NCIC, and FBI, to include stolen property, wanted, missing, sex offenders, and/or protective order status. Emails updates daily to the supervisor and support staff.
  • Communicates by two-way radio with University Police, Security Officers, and RMS, in accordance with Federal/State Communications Commission regulations, standard public safety dispatching guidelines, and specific University and unit guidelines; relays and coordinates information and provides support to all field units.
  • Monitors campus burglar alarms which informs the department of possible danger; remains familiar with the Emergency Response Guidebook and remains prepared to inform officers of instructions.
  • Notifies housing personnel (i.e. maintenance, head residents, student managers, and pertinent personnel) during weekends, evenings, or holidays of problems relating to housing; notifies UPD personnel of emergencies and of major crimes, accidents, and fires on campus.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years full-time Experience. High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) certification may substitute for the 2 years of full-time employment or military experience.

Other Requirements:
  • Work rotating shifts, evenings and holidays. Applicant must successfully pass keyboarding test, communications performance evaluation and complete background investigation.
