GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the vision, mission and values of the college and District. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining state-of-the-art programs in the disciplines of Oceanography & Geology for the Department of Earth Sciences, including the development, implementation and articulation of curriculum, and hiring of part-time instructors. The department has a commitment to promoting field experiences and integrating curriculum between related scientific disciplines. It is expected that this position will support and help to grow the department in these areas. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, occasional weekend field trips, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. Instructors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSIGNMENT:

1. Teach lecture and laboratory classes in oceanography and geology.

2. Develop curricula and innovative teaching materials and methods for Earth Science courses (particularly oceanography & geology) designed to optimize student learning and success.

3. Work with Earth Science students to further development of learning and study skills in science classes.

4. Participate in Department of Earth Sciences planning and decision-making including preparation and implementation of operational, planning, growth and budgetary strategies.

5. Participate in the shared governance process and serve on college committees.

6. Advise students regarding degree requirements and career opportunities in Earth Science disciplines.

7. Work with college articulation officer to articulate Earth Science courses with transfer institutions.

8. Provide academic assistance to the students outside of class (e.g., during office hours), and participate in out of class activities such as club sponsorship, supervision of independent projects, and development of workshops to better prepare students for academic success.
