Coordinator of Residence Hall Overnight Operations

Primary Function:
This position is responsible for managing NIU's residence hall attendant program that works evenings to monitor and administer the guest registration program and help facilitate other desk operation services. The individual in this position works under the supervision of the Senior Associate Director for Residential Life. The position also collaborates closely with NIU Police Department, Physical Plant, Heat Plant, and Onecard Office, among others. Work hours will be primarily evenings and overnight/early morning.



Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves in a supervisory capacity during the timeframe for guest registration in the residence halls overnight operations. Coordinates student residence hall attendants tasked with monitoring entrances and lobbies for the purposes of registering residents and approved guests. Serves in second level response after first level of student residence hall attendants. Situations may include mediation, facility concerns, emergency response, and/or to NIU Police Department about alleged illegal activities and oversee processes related to issuance of temporary NIU Onecards. Will act as person in charge unless the event requires the arrival of other Housing and Residential Services and/or NIU officials. Coordinates the integration and transition from Night Operations to Day Operation desk staff. Works collaboratively with residential life staff in all buildings, including Community Advisors, Desk Attendants, Hall Directors, etc. Must have sensitivity to multicultural issues and support the creation and appreciation of a diverse environment. Practices the appreciation of cultural differences and facilitates the development of them in others. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.



Minimum Required Qualifications:
  1. High School Graduation or GED.
  2. Any one or combination totaling two (2) year (24 months) from the categories below:
    • A. college course work in criminal justice, communication, hospitality, social sciences, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • 30 semester hours equals six (6) months
      • 60 semester hours or an Associates Degree equals twelve (12) months


    • B. supervisory or administrative work experience which could include customer service, crisis management, public safety such as a security guard or dispatcher, or closely related experience.


Education and Experience Preferred:
1. B.A. or B.S. degree in communication, counseling, hospitality, social sciences, criminal justice, sociology, management, criminal justice, or a closely related field.2. Demonstrated knowledge of, and understand, rules and regulations of the University pertaining to residence halls and apartments.3. Demonstrated knowledge of procedures for dealing with fire alarms and maintaining safety of the halls and apartments in emergency situations.4. Demonstrated knowledge for the process and procedures for managing lock outs, temporary card issuance, and filing maintenance work orders.5. Demonstrated knowledge for university guest registration processes and procedures.6. Demonstrated knowledge with scheduling workers, managing time sheets and basic time keeping functions.7. Possess the communications skills needed to deal effectively with a diverse public and staff.8. Sensitivity and understanding of diversity issues and cultural competence training.9. Know how to deal with employees and earn their respect so that a good working environment can be created.10. Exercise discretion in dealing with emergencies or individuals who are breaking laws, rules, or regulations in the residence halls/apartment during limited access hours.
