Compensation Analyst

Job Summary
As a Compensation Analyst, you will be responsible for day-to-day management of the university's compensation programs to ensure internal equity and competitiveness with the external market. Operating as an internal consultant, you will provide expertise and guidance to university partners to help them achieve their business goals while adhering to employment laws, university policies and regulations, and pay administration guidelines.

Job Description

Typical job duties include but not limited to:
  • Consults with university partners to assess business needs and makes recommendations based on career ladders, talent management and retention best practices, compliance with employment laws, and university guidelines.
  • Conducts job analyses using quantitative and qualitative job evaluation methodology to determine appropriate salary level according to compensation guidelines. Makes classification and pay level determinations.
  • Conducts salary analyses and makes salary adjustment recommendations for reclassifications, temporary additional duties or interim appointments, market adjustments, merit increases, or discretionary increases.
  • Partners with the Talent Acquisition team to review candidate offers/counteroffers with a focus on internal equity and market competitiveness.
  • Reviews new position requests, modifications and reclassifications to determine scope of work, grade, classification and alignment with job family structure.
  • Administers the annual staff and faculty increase and promotion processes. Prepares costing forecasts and final payroll cost increases for leadership.
  • Performs analyses to ensure market competitiveness and internal equity. Proactively identifies potential areas of inequity and makes recommendations to leadership.
  • Participates in salary surveys by accurately benchmarking jobs, gathering data, and submitting surveys to providers within deadlines.
  • Complies and maintains data within third party compensation software.
  • Prepares ad hoc compensation data requests and reports.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of salary administration, compensation policies, and bonus plans including policy review and pay structure maintenance.
  • Collaborates with HRIS to audit data on a regular basis.


Other duties:
  • Assists with maintaining HR website Compensation and Classification content.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or closely related field.
  • Four years of progressively responsible full-time professional experience in Human Resources, at least two of which are as a Compensation Analyst.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience with analysis of large data sets.
  • Experience with salary survey participation.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Excel including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, SUMIF, and COUNTIF.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or closely related field.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM SCP certification.
  • CCP certification.
  • Four years of full-time professional experience as a Compensation Analyst.
  • Professional work experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with Payfactors compensation management software.
  • Experience and proficiency with Workday including Advanced Compensation.

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to human resources and employment.
  • Knowledge of current and best practices in compensation administration.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate complex concepts.
  • Strong organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to challenges.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively within a diverse community and willing to contribute to a team effort.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
