Job Summary
Duties: The Department of Dance at the University of Michigan seeks an experienced dance teacher and artist who is actively engaged in defining what dance is, and what dance can be through deep physical investigation. Embodied research should drive the applicant's work as a dancemaker, thinker, and critical pedagogue. We welcome an artist working in contemporary forms of dance who also is informed both by the histories of these forms and the innovative possibilities that can result from this investigation. This includes dance artists working in dance forms that investigate race, and gender and sexuality, particularly those of the Africanist, Asian, and Latinx diasporas and practices. We require an individual with a national and/or international profile, who will work to deepen and extend the department's connections to the professional field, both nationally and internationally. This artist may assist in the department's ongoing efforts to expand its connections with the local and regional communities, incorporating pedagogical investigation, engagement, and assessment. This individual will contribute to the advancement of the department's commitment to diversity and inclusion. In the area of research, our colleague should contribute and develop choreography for concert stages and/or other venues, collaborative and interdisciplinary projects, and investigations of the theoretical underpinnings of contemporary and/or historical dance practices. In the area of teaching, our colleague will teach in the areas of physical practice, choreography, collaborative artmaking, and pedagogy to a diverse population of students, including those in BFA, MFA, and liberal arts programs. Additional areas of teaching expertise could include: somatics, creative technologies for dance, and commercial dance, among others. In terms of service, our colleague will demonstrate leadership in both undergraduate and graduate programs, curriculum development, advising, and governance within the department, college, university and the professional field.
