Assistant/Associate Director for Regional Programs; Alumni Relations

The assistant/associate director for regional programs is responsible for engaging and cultivating alumni, current parents, and other USD constituents with programs and communications utilizing the Torero Network and specifically, Torero Clubs. This position is charged with building and fostering the engagement lifecycle of USD's constituents in major markets throughout the country. The assistant/associate director develops targeted programs and events for populations of regionally-segmented alumni, parents, and other USD supporters, consistently evaluating and improving programming for maximum engagement. This position works closely with Admissions on recruitment and yield efforts, Annual Giving to convert engagement into philanthropy and increase alumni giving and participation rates, Athletics to highlight and support our Torero teams as they travel across the country, and Development to both qualify prospects and effectively coordinate fundraising strategies. The assistant/associate director works in close coordination with the director of alumni operations and engagement as well as the rest of the Alumni Relations team and colleagues in Parent Relations. This position receives supervision from the Director of Alumni Operations and Engagement. This positionmay be asked to oversee student workers, temporary clerical workers (aka casual workers), and other non-salaried support positions assigned to the Office of Alumni Relations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Regional Engagement and Torero Club Program Management
In collaboration with other Alumni Relations and Parent Relations staff members, this position will integrate alumni, current parents, athletic boosters, and other USD constituents into Torero Clubs and through other regional engagement opportunities.
Build a broader community of USD constituents to enhance networking opportunities, spirit-building, and philanthropic support.
Enhance current programs and develop new programs in conjunction with other staff, alumni and parent volunteers, faculty, and students - all with the goal of strengthening the global USD network, broadening USD's regional presence (including local programming through San Diego County Torero Clubs).
Work with Career Development, Student Life, Admissions, Athletics, the College, schools, and other departments to identify internship, networking, and volunteer opportunities for current students, alumni, parents, and other USD constituents through USD's regional network. The position will require extensive work with volunteers and collaboration with Alumni Relations' volunteer coordinator.
Build and manage programs to engage and cultivate alumni in areas outside of our Torero Clubs.
Establish programs that facilitate alumni networks and communication for these alumni populations. Most importantly, the assistant/associate director will establish programs that enable alumni to support USD and one another.
Collect data on regional programs, and analyze/strategize for greater alumni engagement scores including but not limited to event impact reports, event attendance reports, data in Ellucian Advance, post-event follow up and surveys, and additional collection points as needed.
In partnership with the director of alumni operations and engagement, oversee the Regional Programs' budget expenditures and revenue goals.
Identify potential donors to the university, assess areas of philanthropic interest against institutional need, and request research on individual donors and/or corporate entities to understand capability.
Interact with donors and/or corporate entities including but not limited to individual visits, personal invitations to events on campus or regionally, and correspondence via phone, email, and mail.
Manage a portfolio of 25-50 donors and assigned prospects, including regional Torero Club leaders, through a moves management process including identification, cultivation, and stewardship strategies.
Working with Annual Giving and Development, formulate fundraising strategies for priority institutional support via individual gifts and/or sponsorships to the university.
Coordinate fundraising activities with central and decentralized development teams including but not limited to Regional Rally efforts, Torero Tuesday support, ensuring Telefunding is apprised of regional efforts to build rapport with donors, ensuring each Torero Club president is a current fiscal year donor, working with directors of development on partnership opportunities in the regions when traveling, maintain a close relationship with University Events and Partnerships as it pertains to engaging event sponsors through regional programs.
Achieve fundraising goals established by the director and senior director of Alumni Relations and the AVP for Development.
Utilize alumni programs, technology, and staff resources; recruit exceptional local and regional alumni to assist the Alumni Association Board and the alumni boards of each school to donate their time in support of the university.
Identify alumni areas of interest and involve them in the appropriate committee, regional event, or board position.
Inform and consult with the senior director and the Leadership Committee of the Alumni Board to suggest nominations of these individuals to the National Alumni Board.
Inform and consult with the development or senior alumni officer at each school to identify opportunities in each school that would be appropriate for their alumni.
Continue stewardship of above-mentioned individuals to assure their satisfaction and interest are maintained.
Evaluate these individuals as potential donors to the university.
Represent the Office of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association at events on and off-campus to build relationships and strengthen partnerships.
Other duties as assigned to assist other departments within the University Advancement division.
Bachelor's degree required.
Assistant director-level: at least three years' experience in management, alumni engagement, event planning, student programming, volunteer leadership and/or fundraising; experience in higher education preferred.
Associate director-level: at least five years' experience in management, alumni engagement, event planning, student programming, volunteer leadership and/or fundraising; experience in higher education required.
USD alumnus/a preferred.
Must have the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with a diverse group of staff and volunteers and maintain an attitude that conveys respect.
Excellent written and oral communication skills required as well as exceptional critical listening and thinking skills. Command of the English language, including AP writing style, and standard grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and proofreading skill.
Experience with budget management and basic accounting principles.
Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion.
Must be able to work independently, taking initiative and be able to ascertain priorities in a dynamic environment of regular interruptions, multiple projects, and deadlines.
Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher or another desktop publishing program is preferable. Must know how to use email and the Internet.
Must be willing to travel 25-40% of the time.
Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to effectively trouble-shoot and exercise independent judgment to accommodate constituent (i.e. alumni, students, parents, etc.) concerns.
Must possess flexibility and versatility in order to meet continually shifting priorities.
Must exhibit attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management skills; remain professional under pressure and be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
Must be willing to frequently work after standard work hours and on weekends.
Must be friendly and personable.
