Reporting to the PCI PSOM Licensing Director and supporting all aspects of licensing for the Perelman School of Medicine Office (PSOM).

Job Description

Reporting to the PCI Licensing Director for the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM), the Associate Director works directly as a team member to assist PSOM faculty, staff and students with all aspects of technology transfer and commercialization.

The Associate Director of Technology Licensing for PSOM:
  • Works directly as a team member to assist PSOM faculty, staff and students with all aspects of technology transfer and commercialization;
  • Builds new research and development collaborations with industry partners;
  • Effectively manages all internal and external relationships with key stakeholders to fully enable technology commercialization;
  • Proactively builds and expands commercial relationships within assigned departments, divisions and specifies technology focus areas;
  • Identifies projects and developments of commercial interest;
  • Facilitates the establishment of research collaborations with industry and negotiates licenses for intellectual property and sponsored research agreements for research programs, respectively;
  • Conceptualizes and coordinates the strategic application of resources to achieve these targets, including the creation of innovative business arrangements and collaborations;
  • Provides excellent customer and client service in all areas of effort and interaction.


Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Lead interaction and outreach with the faculty and the research staff of targeted departments to identify fundable research projects and technologies with commercial/licensing potential, facilitate patenting of research developments, and develop research collaborations with industry. This includes triaging new disclosures and participating in the intellectual property protection process. Provide world class customer service.
  • In collaboration and support of faculty, initiate, draft, negotiate and finalize licensing deals; participate in licensing, research deals (including sponsored research); analysis (including technology valuation), including targeting commercial partners, due diligence, negotiation of deals and subsequent business integration
  • Work closely with PCI Ventures, Corporate Contract, Corporate Outreach and Strategic Alliances to develop and implement new sponsored research, corporate alliances and new venture opportunities for selected technology and faculty interest opportunities
  • Develop and implement marketing and commercialization strategies and marketing activities for technologies, with primary focus on assigned area(s)
  • Collaborate closely and communicate regularly with other members of the PCI staff and function as part of a highly matrixed organizational team, with particular emphasis on developing and maintaining strong collaborative relationships across PCI.
  • Serve as a mentor to junior TLOs.


Qualifications
  • Assistant Director - M.S. required, Ph.D./M.D. in a biomedical science preferred plus 3-5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate Director - Ph.D., preferably in a life/health sciences related field required plus 3-7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Both require experience in academic technology transfer, corporate business development or equivalent intellectual property/corporate contracts experience. Must have demonstrated track record of successful negotiating and closing license agreements; knowledge of intellectual property and licensing practice; ability to identify and handle inventions in diverse fields outside of area of technical expertise, excellent time management and prioritization skills; excellent verbal & written communication skills; strong attention to details, follow-through & closing.

Pay Range
$90,860.00 - $142,844.66
Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
