The School of Social Work at Simmons University seeks an adjunct instructor to teach a doctoral course the Spring 2020 semester titled Philosophy of Science. The Spring 2020 term course dates are January 16 - April 30, 2020. The course meets for 14 weeks on Thursdays from 3:00pm - 5:50pm on campus. The course will have approximately 8-10 students.

Course Title and Description

SW 631: Philosophy of Science

This course focuses on the theory of knowledge - epistemology - and knowledge building in the field of social work. Course content explores traditional scientific epistemologies and the nature of ruth and evidence. It considers alternate paradigms that challenge the dominant norms of knowing and how social science does and does not integrate alternate frameworks into research and scholarship. Issues of social and economic justice, power and privilege, and diversity are integrated across course content. Students engage in critical thinking and writing about the application of epistemologies to social work research, the role of the researcher, and the interpretation, adoption and dissemination of knowledge for policy, practice, and future research.

Qualifications:
  • Candidates should have a Ph.D. in the social sciences
  • Have prior graduate-level teaching experience
  • A record of research and scholarship demonstrated through peer-reviewed publication within the past 3 years
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Ability to engage with students outside of the classroom as needed
