Job Description
The Leadership & Service Coordinator (Civic Engagement) focuses on fostering civic engagement and leadership development among students through educational programming and community initiatives. Responsibilities include collaborating with students, faculty, and community groups to encourage informed, active civic participation, while implementing the Civic Action Scorecard to recognize and incentivize student involvement. The role involves developing materials and providing opportunities for students to build civic knowledge, skills, and mindsets, as well as creating pathways for students to engage with civic and community leaders in Knoxville. Additionally, the position oversees the Leadership Knoxville Scholars (LKS) program, including recruitment, marketing, and coordination of site visits, activities, and community immersion experiences. It provides mentorship to Scholars, supporting their development through regular check-ins, leadership training, and guidance on Community Action Projects. The role also involves managing the program's budget and collaborating with Leadership Knoxville to enhance programming and guest speaker recruitment.


Responsibilities
Civic Engagement Education and Programming:
  • Collaborate with students, colleagues, and groups to identify and encourage student civic engagement, teaching students how to be active and educated community members and to amplify opportunities for civic learning and community engagement initiatives that encourage student involvement in leadership for public purposes.
  • Implement the Civic Action Scorecard to incentivize and recognize student involvement in a broader range of civic and community activities, encouraging more students to participate.
  • Develop materials that supports civic education and intentionally prepares students for informed, engaged participation in their communities' civic and democratic life by providing opportunities to develop civic knowledge, skills, and mindsets through learning and practice.
  • Identify opportunities for students to engage with civic and community leaders in the Knoxville community.
  • Design and implement civic learning and community engagement initiatives that encourage student involvement in leadership for public purposes.
  • Support and amplify the efforts of the Student Government Association, the Vols Vote Initiative, and other campus partners that lead voter registration efforts and early voting initiatives.
  • Provide direct oversight for civic and community engagement resources, including website development and maintenance, social media, and other communications platforms in partnership with Student Life Communications.


Leadership Knoxville Scholars:

The Leadership Knoxville Scholars (LKS) program is a two-year, cohort- style leadership development and community immersion program with the ultimate goal of retaining the university's best students as leaders in the Knoxville community post-graduation. The program targets current rising junior leaders and is in collaboration with Leadership Knoxville.
  • Lead and coordinate the recruitment, marketing and selection efforts of 25-30 new scholars each spring.
  • Manage the programming of LKS Knoxville Excursions, including selection and implementation of all site visits and accompanying activities.
  • Serve as the program's advisor to 50 scholars, including regular check-ins, communicating about expectations and program dates, and other programmatic requirements.
  • Collaborate with Leadership Knoxville to recruit and schedule guest speakers.
  • Support students in the implementation of Community Action Projects (CAPs). This includes communicating/meeting regularly and providing consistent feedback, support, and guidance.
  • Help manage programmatic budget and gift account.
  • Work alongside the Associate Director to develop, plan, and implement program experiences.
  • Assist in the development of course materials, weekly lesson plans, creating in-class activities based on course content, and otherwise support the class as necessary.


Strategic Planning & Assessment:
  • Oversee all survey development/distribution, tracking, and retention for the Leadership Knoxville Scholars program.
  • Assist in the education and management of office assessment practices, survey development and distribution, annual reporting, and strategic planning for the JCLS.
  • Research and benchmark trending national assessment practices or instruments for leadership and service programming.


Leadership, Service, & Outreach:
  • Assist with university, divisional and community events as a representative of JCLS.
  • Cultivate relationships and engage with key campus and community stakeholders and programmatic vendors.
  • Serve as steward to current donors.
  • Serve on various university and community committees, commissions, and boards to support leadership development and civic engagement of all students at UTK.
  • Assist with any tasks related to executing MLK Jr. Days of Service.
  • Present programs and serve in an advisory capacity as requested by campus, community, and student constituents.
  • Work collaboratively with other campus entities to provide educational opportunities for students.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution by start date.
  • Experience: 1 yr post-undergraduate experience in student life, higher education administration, non-profit management, or related field.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of student development and service-learning theory, and their application to professional practice in higher education.
  • Strong student advocacy skills of community building.
  • Ability to work/collaborate with internal/external constituents to foster positive/productive relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal and listening skills.
  • Knowledge of diversity and social justice issues.
  • Ability to show initiative, make sound decisions, work independently, and multi-task.
  • Skilled at providing quality customer service and interacting effectively with campus community.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member in a diverse environment.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: A master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: Professional experience in the area of leadership and/or service. Experience in the following areas preferred: Curriculum development and classroom/workshop instruction; coordinating, planning, or attending leadership development and/or community engagement/service opportunities; Advising student organizations and groups; Assessment and evaluation.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Skilled in coordination/oversight of leadership development and service programming; Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Campus Labs, GivePulse, as well as other relevant computer systems; Skilled in classroom instruction and/or student leader training; Ability to manage, supervise, and train student staff.
